We are so pleased that you are considering serving as a volunteer mentor. Mentors are critical to FYF's work, providing regular and direct guidance and support to young people navigating early adulthood after leaving the foster care system.
Due to the importance of this role, volunteer mentors must commit to:
• Minimum of 1 year of volunteer service - Weekly meetings and/or communications with mentee that range from 1 – 5 hours (depending on mentee goals and needs, and meetings/communication are in-person or remote) - Meeting in-person with mentee at least 1 time each month (some exceptions) - Conduct a detailed, monthly review of mentee financial documents; provide mentee with positive and critical feedback; provide mentee with guidance and opportunities for improved money management (training provided) - Assist mentee in identifying additional short- and mid-term objectives; check-in, review, and support mentees in refining goals and objectives (training provided) - Provide FYF with regular, timely, detailed updates on all meetings and communications with mentees through the FYF's online system (training provided)
Mentors provide direct support and referrals to community resources across a range of areas to support mentees in building life skills to support a successful transition to independence and self-sufficiency.
We will use this information to inform mentor-mentee matches, as we are able. Check each that you feel confident supporting directly:
We depend on mentors sharing in the responsibility of ensuring all young adult participants adhere to program expectations to ensure each is held to the same standard and given the same opportunities for success. We also depend on mentors recognizing that FYF funds are limited and respecting funding decisions related to their mentee. Please note that FYF’s ability to provide funds for certain expenses in the past does not guarantee that funds will be available for those same expenses in the future. Finally, we rely on mentors providing regular reports on their meetings and communications with mentees so that we can measure and share our organizational impact with supporters, helping ensure the organizations ongoing sustainability.
